Sports on Vancouver Island
Most students enjoy sports and of course they like it even more if it is not too expensive. Here you can find information how you can enjoy sporting activities as a student of the Vancouver Island University without high membership fees or expensive gear!
VIU Volleyball:
In summer you can play volleyball without any charge on the Vancouver Island University Volleyball court. Here you get all important information: International Student Activity Calendar
Canoe and Kayak:
If you would like to explore the harbor of Nanaimo by paddle, check out Alberni Outpost. They have great offers! From 5pm to 8pm you can rent a canoe or kayak for as low as 16.99 CAD!
Hiking on Vancouver Island:
Of course you can also go hiking on Vancouver Island! Indeed Vancouver Island is famous for its hiking options. If you plan to do a longer trip, you should have the right footgear of course. But on the Tourist Information website of Nanaimo you will find hiking trail that can be handled even with jogging shoes. It does not matter if you are an experienced alpinist or a Sunday-evening-walker, on Vancouver Island you will find hiking trails for every taste.
Vancouver Island by bike:
For those of you that love to bike, you should definitely check out CycleVancouverIsland. There you find a lot of information on the best routes, you can book biking tours and they recommend you good bike-shops and rental stations.
Fitness center in Nanaimo:
The Fitness Edge Health center offers you very favorable conditions if you decide to go there in a group of min. 4 persons. You pay 40 CAD for your personal fitness exercise and the more people you can win over for this, the more fun you will have! If you want to go to the center by your own this is also no big deal. You do not need to stick to an expensive contract; you can also pay the 8.00 CAD per visit and decide later if you want to close the contract or not.
Jogging: For sure you can jog everywhere and by your own or in a group. But if you like to jog in a group, you should visit the Saturday Morning Run des Bastion Running Clubs. There you get the chance to get to know other joggers, you can really let yourself go and maybe find some new friends as well.
